Professional Energy Audits for any size of school
Identify, plan and act to reduce wasted energy
An energy audit provides the ideal starting point for a School Energy Savings programme. It will identify the energy consumption trends, the energy costs both during and out-of term time and a prioritised list of Energy Savings Projects that will help reduce energy waste and decrease your Carbon Footprint.
Our Energy Audits are delivered by Certified Energy Auditors and, for lighting surveys, by Certified Lighting Efficiency Professionals. All of which are DBS cleared to work in schools.
Our Energy Auditing services
Identify energy usage trends and prioritise energy savings projects
We have undertaken many energy audits in schools over the past 10 years. Our audits range from simple bill analysis through to detailed real-time energy data collection. Our audit reports are simple to understand yet provide the detail to make informed decisions on how to tackle energy waste.
Our 4 step Energy Auditing process provides a framework and a consistent level of service across all our clients.
The steps are:
Step 1: Bill verification
This desk based exercise analysis your energy bills for the past 3 years to ensure that you are only paying for what you use. We look at the trends, unit prices and the taxes payable such as CCL and VAT. Any discrepancies will be noted in the audit report.
Typical invoicing issues we pick up on include:
- Over and under charging on estimated bills when there is a price change
- Paying CCL and incorrect VAT charges for certain state schools
- Not claiming domestic rates for boarding provision energy bills
- Correct billing meters, published charges and invoice dates
Typical usage issues we are able to identify at this stage are:
- Potential water leaks due to excessive usage
- Out of sync seasonal energy usage
- Excessive non-working time energy consumption
- Incorrect energy trends due to estimated bills
Step 2: Site surveys
Our Energy Auditors will then undertake a full site survey to capture data such as heating systems, lighting and lighting controls, small power use (Projectors, computers, servers etc), swimming pools, kitchen & dining facilities and outside lighting.
All of these Significant Energy Users are rated in terms of energy type and energy usage, ownership, condition and opportunity to optimise.
We usually survey the property twice - once during opening times and once after hours. This gives us an indication as to any systems that are left running overnight or over weekends.
Step 3: Energy Measurement (Optional)
Some of our clients would like to get the real baseline of energy consumption in their school. We have the equipment to capture detailed energy consumption from a number of aspects: the whole property, building by building, and by energy user. An example of this would be lighting costs broken down to types of areas (classrooms, halls, outside, offices etc).
The length of data collection can range from a few hours to a full year depending on the requirement. We usually can pick up a very good profile in a 4-week period that includes a half-term.
Types of data we can collect:
- Electricity usage down to individual user (like a photocopier or a pool pump)
- Water and Gas consumption at a sub-meter level
- Heating energy by building
- Temperature and humidity levels by room
- Footfall and occupancy levels
Step 4: Compile and issue the Audit report
The last step in the process is to compile and issue the Energy Audit Report. The report is usually provided in two formats to cater for different audiences.
The summary report will identify the different energy systems, their trends and provide a prioritised list of areas to focus in on. The audience is mainly for the Board of Governors, the SLT and in-school Energy Champions or Energy clubs (such as eco-schools' groups)
The main report provides the details behind the summary report and will provide the evidence as to why the priorities list have been ranked. For example we will provide detailed cost analysis on changing the lights to LED or potential savings on installing air-sourced heat pumps.
Previous projects we have delivered
Our Energy Auditing projects include bills analysis, ESOS reports, Energy metering and in-depth Energy Audit reporting. A few examples are shown below:
A small school wanted to understand their energy spend and how they could reduce it. All areas of the property were audited, including undertaking a thermal camera survey. The outcome was a prioritised list of projects that included lighting, boiler replacement, wireless heating controls and upgrading urinals to waterless based systems.
A large school wanted to understand the electricity usage profile across their estate. We installed energy meters across 6 main distribution boards to capture 4 weeks of electricity consumption. The results showed a savings of around 25% was possible by implementing a prioritised list of energy savings projects. These projects included operational changes, new LED Lighting, installation of sensors and upgrading old equipment.
A maintained school wanted to understand why their energy bills had substantially increased over the past year. Our bill analysis uncovered incorrect unit pricing by their Energy broker. In addition they also received a refund of £5,500 due to incorrect VAT and CCL taxes being applied.
