Guildford school children learn about energy

Guildford based business, Ecopare are delighted to be partnering with Guildford Borough Council and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre to provide a series of free Hydro Education Drama workshops, offered to local primary schools in the Borough. The project is aimed at local school children aged between 9 and 11.

The workshops, which started in October 2016 are taking place at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford. Almost 1,000 years of history are covered in a couple of hours during these entertaining and interactive workshops run by actors, which cover the invention of the water wheel, royal disputes, gruesome accidents, hauntings and whacky new inventions.

During the workshops, Ecopare discuss household energy consumption with the children using different devices. At the end of the workshop they are given thermal imaging cameras to experiment with on different types of lighting, for example to see the difference in energy consumption from a fluorescent light to a modern LED light.

The workshops include a visit to the nearby Toll House to see Guildford’s hydro turbine in action. It is now 10 years since Guildford Borough Council re-opened the derelict mill site with a new hydro-electric turbine which produces electricity by harnessing energy from water flowing down the River Wey. The project has proved highly successful and the turbine continues to generate sufficient energy to power approximately 50 homes, generating over 1.5GWh of electricity which spills directly to the National Grid.

The schools that participate in the workshops are invited to take part in a Poster competition, with children designing their vision of an energy efficient school. The deadline for entries is the end of May 2017 with judging being undertaken by the Mayor of Guildford in June. Prizes for the winning entries are a £100 Amazon voucher, a family ticket for a day at Guildford Spectrum and tickets for a performance at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.

This exciting project will run for the next two years and it is planned that around 30 local schools will participate in the scheme. To book a workshop, email or call 01483 444509.
